Alpine Program Director and U16 Men’s Head Coach
Mike returned to SMS in 2007 after spending 10 years with the U.S. Ski Team. He is the former U.S. Ski Team Head Technical Coach where he coached athletes to three World Championship medals in 2005 and to an Olympic Gold Medal in 2006. During his 10 years with the U.S. Ski Team, Mike coached athletes to more than 25 World Cup podiums. Mike’s Olympic coaching experience has included: 1994 Lillihammer; 2002 Salt Lake City; 2006 Torino.
During the 2002 season, Mike and the U.S. Ski Team won the Marc Holder Trophy for Best Overall Team at the World Junior Championship, an award that had never been won by the U.S. Ski Team. Mike won the International Coach of the Year Award in 2006 for his performance during the Olympics in Torino, Italy.
Sylvan came to SMS from Team Summit, at Copper Mountain, Colorado, where he was the Ability Coach for J1, J2 and PG men and women. In his position, Sylvan managed race schedules and organized team travel, as well as goal setting and evaluation with athletes. Throughout his 10-year coaching career, Sylvan has worked on many regional and national projects including serving as a Nor Am Coach and D-Team Selection Camp Coach for the Rocky Mountain Division. Formerly, Sylvan worked as a coach for Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and the University of Colorado, Boulder. He was a D1 collegiate ski racer at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
U19/U21 Men’s Coach
Erin came to SMS from Mount Mansfield Ski Club where she was the women’s FIS coach. In her position, she coordinated the women’s conditioning program, as well as managed all athlete development on and off the hill. Prior to her experience at MMSC, she was a women’s FIS coach at Green Mountain Valley School. She graduated from the University of Vermont, where she was a four-year member of the UVM Ski Team.
U19/U21 Men’s Coach
Will came to SMS after graduating from Williams College, where he was a four-year member of the Williams College Ski Team. After Williams, Will spent a winter in Jackson Hole and a year working in finance in New York. A graduate of the SMS Class of 2007, Will is happy to be back coaching, working in the dorm and enjoying all aspects of SMS life.
Alpine Equipment Manager and Coach
Dan came to SMS in the winter of 2003 after spending 18 years coaching at Mount Snow. At Mount Snow, Dan spent two years as the Head Alpine Coach. Dan grew up racing in nearby New Hampshire where he competed out of Pats Peak and Sunapee and attended Keene High School. In addition to ski racing, he competed in Nordic jumping and, at one point, was ranked third in the East. He continued on to compete at the D1 level for Keene State College for a season before he transferred to University of Massachusetts, Stockbridge School of Agriculture.
U16 Men’s Coach
Tony began his coaching career at Gunstock Ski Club in Gilford, N.H. and has coached at all levels of ski racing for the past 20 years. His coaching credits include working with J6 athletes all the way up to U.S. Ski Team and college athletes. Tony is an avid Crossfit athlete, father to a ski-racing son, and is married to Carolyn Beckedorff (SMS ‘85).
Athletic Performance Director and Coach
Jay heads up our athlete performance program at SMS, a new program focused on off-season strength and conditioning. An alum, Jay returns to SMS having recently graduated from the University of New Hampshire. At UNH Jay majored in accounting and finance and was a four-year member of the alpine ski team. On the ski team Jay served as the captain his senior year and was named All-American, having finished 7th at the 2016 NCAA Championship GS in Steamboat.
U19 Women’s Head Coach
Micah came to SMS with nearly a decade of coaching experience at the USSA, FIS, and Nor-Am levels. For six years, Micah was a very successful women’s alpine coach as well as leading their strength and conditioning program at Green Mountain Valley School. Micah is a top-level coach within the National Development System, working on regional and national projects, as well as guest coaching with the U.S. Ski Team. Micah was a five-time All-American in skiing and soccer.
U16 Women’s Head Coach
Morgan Korpi is an alumnus of Stratton Mountain School. After a successful five-year stint coaching at Bromley Mountain, Morgan came to SMS to head up the women’s alpine equipment program. At Bromley, Morgan developed athletes from the U14 level up through the FIS level. He studied at the University of Vermont, where he was a collegiate soccer player.
U16 Women’s Coach
Christian Herzog is a Women’s Alpine U16 Coach. He comes to SMS with a wealth of coaching experience, most recently at Team Summit in Copper Mountain, Colo., where he was the Head U16 Coach. Previously, he worked as the Head U14 Coach at the Loon Race Team in Lincoln, NH. Christian attended Colorado Mountain College where he studied ski and snowboard business.
U19 Alpine Coach / Athletic Trainer
At SMS Coley works as a U19 women’s coach, leading dry land workouts as well as performing various on hill duties. Coley comes to SMS having recently graduated from the University of New Hampshire where he skied on the alpine ski team. On the UNH ski team Coley served as captain his senior year, was a two time NCAA All-American, and was named the UNH 2015 student athlete of the year. Coley graduated with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and will be assisting with athlete rehabilitation throughout the year.
U14 Head Coach
For two years, Naga was the J3 and J4 Head Coach at Stratton Training Center. Prior to that, he worked at Hunter Mountain as the Head Coach for J3, J4 and J5 athletes for five years. Naga has a personal background in skiing as well, holding the Japanese national record for speed skiing. In addition to his ski coaching experience, Naga has more than 20 years business experience in imports and marketing for global companies.
Devo Team Head Coach
Steve is a former U.S. Ski Team A-Team athlete, and during his time on the National Team, won titles including U.S. Downhill and Combined Champion and CanAm Slalom Champion. He was a member of the FIS World Championship Team, and has been the Director of Lathrop Ski Camps for 15 years, where he has directed young ski racers in all the fundamentals of ski racing.
Alpine Admissions Coordinator and Develo Team Coach
Jim Comes to SMS having recently served as the Director of Development at Mt. Snow Academy and before that the program director at Magic Mountain. Jim works on the hill as a development coach and off the hill as our head of alpine recruiting. In addition Jim is an experience soccer coach, having coached for Southern VT Fusion for the past eight years and will be coaching men’s soccer this fall. Jim Graduated from Middlebury College where he was a four-year member of the alpine ski team. We are happy to welcome Jim to the SMS community.
Joe has worked throughout New England as a ski coach at various levels. He worked at Okemo Mountain School and Loon Mountain Race Team at the FIS level. He also worked for The Speed Factory as a ski technician and graduated from Plymouth State University with a degree in business administration. At Plymouth, Joe was a member of the Plymouth State Ski Team and served as captain of the Easter Division Championship Team in 2011.
